Communication is a basic human need, but for many individuals with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities, expressing their needs, wants, and thoughts can be extremely difficult. The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) was created to help overcome this challenge. PECS provides a structured, evidence-based approach that enables individuals to communicate using pictures, making it possible for nonverbal or minimally verbal individuals to engage with others more effectively. Since its development, PECS has transformed countless lives by opening the door to greater independence, social interaction, and improved quality of life for those with communication barriers.
